There is something really special about Mexico to me. Maybe it’s because I’ve lived in two Spanish speaking cities, Cuernavaca, MX + Granada, ESP, or maybe it’s because I’ve always enjoyed the people I’ve met in these cities, who have always seemed open to helping me learn and speak their language. With that said, my Spanish is not as good as it use to be and I’ve been known to be incredibly shy and soft spoken in the past. This trip was a good excuse to actually set aside the time to practice and gain some confidence. I spent time on Duolingo almost everyday, which helped me ease back into the basics (although I still can’t roll my “R’s” to save my life.) Evan and I had a few days to ourselves to explore, relax and speak to locals before the wedding. We kayaked, had a few romantic dinners, waded in the ocean and took naps on the beach. The second to last day, I photographed this unreal Pueblo Bonito Pacifica wedding, and I’m still pinching myself. What a trip. It really was the perfect way to end 2021.
Jordan and Shaiann waited almost two years to get married at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica in Cabo, Mexico. The first round of shut downs due to Covid-19, back in March of 2020, happened just days after their initial wedding date. Evan and I were ready to hop on a plane out of Oregon State but plans were called off the night before our flight. This was the start to a really difficult time for the wedding industry and for those trying to get married, and I remember feeling overwhelmed and debilitated by uncertainty. I’m so happy that my couples are able to celebrate in some capacity again, even if the celebrations are more quaint.
Pueblo Bonito Pacifica is nestled on a private beach, just minutes from the heart of Cabo, while still feeling very private. This place is known for it’s luxurious and all-inclusive experience but the architecture, and muted yellow exterior is what intrigued me the most. As someone who mostly photographs weddings along the west coast, amongst natures deep greens and blues, it is always nice to play with the more muted color palette of the desert.
I was also very creatively inspired by the light on this day and at this particular hotel. In the entrance of the hotel there is a square cut out in the wall that allows the afternoon sun to creep through. The warmth of the sun paired with the warmth of the walls, helped to create some really dynamic imagery of J + S for both the first look and wedding party photos. The ceremony was also very unique because it took place right before sunset, which can be rare during wedding season, due to scheduling conflicts combined with longer summer nights. Overall, it was a dream wedding to photograph.
Jordan + Shai were especially gracious to vendors and guests for sticking along side them through two arduous years of planning, and replanning. They made me feel like a guest rather than a vendor, giving Evan and me a seat at the dinner table and including us in an incredible three course dinner. This is becoming more and more common with my couples, and although this gesture is never expected, it is always such an honor. I love how close and connected I’ve felt to all my clients this year and am so thrilled I was the one to photograph their Pueblo Bonito Pacifica wedding in this beautiful country.
